SHOC VOLUNTEERS

A number of SHOC members become part of the SHOC Volunteers Team. Volunteers have all been through heart surgery and are able to speak about their experiences from a patient and / or relatives’ point of view.

SHOC Volunteers visit patients on the Chesterman Unit prior to surgery where they can answer questions about their operation and recovery, and help to allay patients’ fears.

As well as visits on the wards volunteers also attend Pre-surgery Information Sessions held at the hospital where they can respond to specific questions from patients and their relatives, as well as describing ‘what it was like for them’. The SHOC Volunteers ‘ward visiting rota’ is organised by Volunteer Coordinator Jim Whyte who is also on hand for day-to-day support and practicalities.

All SHOC volunteers receive regular guidance support from professional staff working within Chesterman Wing and SHOC is also a partnership organisation working in alignment with the Hospital Trust Volunteer Service protocols.

If pre or post operative patients prefer there is a telephone link (via the Volunteer Coordinator) for people. Anyone wishing to talk to an individual volunteer should email ……………initially.
