VOLUNTEERS NEWS

The SHOC volunteer service is now affiliated to the Sheffield Teaching Hospital’s volunteer service. This will both formally recognise the work that SHOC volunteers undertake with cardiac patients, and also give some benefits and safeguards to them whilst carrying out their duties in the hospital. All volunteers will have to register with the Hospital’s Volunteer Service. Registration with the Hospital Volunteer Service will not change the work SHOC volunteers currently undertake on the Chesterman Unit.

The volunteer is in the unique position of being able to share his or her personal experiences of having heart surgery and respond to questions from patients in relation to that only. Generally the service is running well and comments back from Pre op patients attending the Education sessions are extremely positive saying how useful it is to have volunteers at the sessions. It was noted that there are some new volunteers in the pipeline but Bill Staniland indicated that more volunteers are needed.

If anyone is thinking they would like to get involved with the volunteer service they should contact , Eric Copley  on 0114 2883913, Karen Pearson and Jeanette Douglass (Nurse Specialists) on 0114 2715395.
